Girl Scouts Dish CFLs with Cookies
If you live in Arizona and have a hankering for Girl Scout cookies, you’re in luck—buying a box of your favorite cookies can help you save on your energy bill. The Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona have partnered with the Tucson Electric Power Co. to promote energy-efficiency in the community. As part of the initiative, customers will receive one free CFL light bulb with each cookie order. CFLs use about 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and can last up to 10 times longer, allowing users to save up to $4.50 a year in energy costs—that’s more than the cost of an additional box of cookies! The bulbs are provided through TEP’s Energy Star Lighting program, which makes certain CFL light bulbs purchased in local retail stores up to 50 percent cheaper than regular prices. Both the bulb giveaway and discount program were launched as part of TEP’s plan to meet state-mandated energy-efficiency requirements and are funded by a small “demand side management” surcharge on each TEP customer’s electric bill.
This is the third year the Girl Scouts will have partnered with Tucson Electric Power to distribute energy-efficient bulbs. Last year TEP gave away 100,000 CFL bulbs with cookie sales. This year the Girl Scouts will also partner with TEP’s sister company, UniSource Energy Services, to distribute an additional 24,000 bulbs with cookie deliveries in Santa Cruz County. Working together, the Girl Scouts and TEP will help the community save more than $420,000 in energy costs.
