1000Bulbs Offers Banned T8 700 Series Bulbs

Online lighting retailer 1000Bulbs.com will continue to sell its full line of T8 700 fluorescent lamps despite the ban on these products which went into effect on July 14, 2014. With the ban in place, manufacturers will be forced to cease production of 4-foot medium bi-pin, 2-foot U-shaped, 8-foot Slimline, and 8-foot high-output 700 series lamps due to their inability to meet the energy efficiency requirements implemented by the U.S. Department of Energy.

This most recent ban on the production of T8 700 Series fluorescent lamps has been inevitable since the phase-out of most halogen PAR and fluorescent T12 lamps in July 2012. Before the 2014 phase-out took effect, manufacturers realized that since the 700 Series lamps are less efficient, they would eventually have to be replaced by T8 800 Series and T5 lamps, both of which require greater amounts of rare earth metals and oxides in order to be made. Due to these materials being in such short supply, manufacturers were given a two-year extension to meet production demands for these replacement lamps. Now that the two-year extension has ended, customers can expect increasing difficulty in finding T8 700 series lamps in stores. However, existing stock of these banned fluorescent lamps and their more efficient replacements can be found online at 1000Bulbs.com.

“One of the many reasons our customers shop at 1000Bulbs.com is because of our large selection of lamps. We work hard to continue supplying the lamps our shoppers want, even after a ban has gone into effect," says CEO Kim Pedersen.

While purchasing 700 Series lamps is still an option for now, customers should be aware of their future alternatives. Viable replacements for 700 Series lamps include T5, T8 800 and T8 900 Series lamps, all of which meet the new efficacy requirements of the DOE. For those who will be looking to upgrade from fluorescent to LED, a wide selection of  T8 LED bulbs is also available.

Admittedly, these 700 Series replacements are more expensive than their less efficient counterparts. They do come with their own advantages though, such as improved color rendering. Whereas the typical CRI of a T8 700 lamp falls in the high 70s, T8 800s provide a CRI of 82 or more, which is the ideal standard for lighting in both commercial and residential applications.
