Sony Launches LED Light Bulb Speaker

Sony Launches LED Light Bulb Speaker

While more widely known for the Xperia brand smartphones and their line of cameras and camcorders, Sony, is looking to dabble in the LED lighting arena as well.  The maker of the Walkman launched an LED light bulb that also contains a speaker.  This continues in a trend that has developed over the last year where more technology is being integrated into lighting as it goes more high tech.

The bulb, whose model number is LSPX-100E26J, provides what Sony describes as a combination of light and sound.  Light output is rated at 360 lumens, which is equivalent to a 35W incandescent light bulb since 40W equal LED bulb usually output 450 lumens.  No description is given on the color temperature, but it's fair to assume that it will be warm white which provide a more yellow light.

The two watt speaker is controlled by the supplied remote, or you can pair it with your phone or tablet using a Bluetooth wireless PAN.

With a price of approximately $200 USD, it will be interesting to see how much of a market there is for a product like this.  LED bulbs are known to last for years but, even if it doesn't or if the speaker goes out, you could be left having to shell out even more to replace it.  Sony has continued to be a leader when it comes to new consumer technology and it's great to see them introducing a product in the lighting space.  Hopefully we'll continue to see an evolution of these types of products with a broader appeal and even more functionality.

No announcements have been made as to whether this product will be for sale in the US, but if you're in Japan you should be able to pick one up starting on May 23rd.
