No Lights? No Problem!
Caves can be a lot of fun—if you’re a bear. Otherwise, caves lack a certain warmth that makes a home a home—namely lighting. So, what do you do if your place lacks ceiling lights and looks a bit like, well, a cave? Have no fear, help is here. Here are the top four tips to transform your space from hibernation to hyper-cool!
Recessed Lighting
If you’re a DYI fanatic, this one is for you. Easily, the number one way to lighten and brighten a naturally dim room is through the lighting power of recessed fixtures. There are several types of recessed lighting including incandescent or LED-compatible, halogen, or even recessed lighting options for sloped ceilings. With different trims and housings in a variety of finishes to fit the design motif of nearly any space, recessed lighting can make a bright impact on a dim space. Buyer beware - you will need to put on your construction hat and cut into the ceiling, or hire a pro, to see this transformation through. If this choice isn’t for you, there are plenty of no-construction-needed choices to brighten your space.
Glamps!
Let’s start with the basics but add a twist! Lamps, table or floor, are the go-to for most cases where light is needed but ceiling fixtures are not an option. Available in a range of color temperatures and bulb options, using a lamp to light a room is basic, but brilliant. Instead of treating this option like the boring stalwart of room lighting that it has become for most people, add some glamour to your lamp, a.k.a. “glamp.” When looking for lamps, think about your current furniture and don’t be afraid to select a lamp that will act as an accent piece. If you think about lamps as art, you can convey personality and style with your lighting decisions.
Get stringy with it!
String lights are a fantastic way to bring some much-needed light, and maybe even a little fun, into a room that lacks overhead lights. Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, you can create the feel of an outdoor café with larger, Italian-style stringed lights, or you can reimagine the magic of a brilliant night’s sky with smaller, fairy-style stringed lights. You’ll have the option for either using a wall plug or using batteries to power your new lights, which means no need for an electrician or patching drywall. Just hang them, plug them in, and let the magic begin.
A cool advancement in technology now available in string lights is RGBW. This lighting tech allows you to change the color of your lights from white, to a host of vibrant colors. Most brands offer a remote and a wide range of preset patterns. Talk about fun! Another wonderful thing about string lights - they can of course go on your ceiling, but they are just as great on a wall or on the top of furniture, such as a credenza or an armoire.
Wall sconce for the win!
Wall sconces add a little flare to any lighting design. Available in many styles and designs, often there is no need for an electrician or putting holes into the drywall. While professional mounting is a classy choice, other wall sconces only require a level, a drill, and a few screws. There are also battery-powered wall sconces with rechargeable battery packs available. What’s fantastic about a wall sconce is that it can add to the existing décor of your room. If you favor a mid-century modern flare, take that design to the next level by adding in a few mid-century inspired wall sconces.
